چکیده

Koch (1886) studied the effect of cholera vibrios on guinea-pigs by feeding the animals with big doses of the organisms and then paralysing the gut by intraperitoneal injection of 1 c.cm. of tincture of opium so as to delay evacuation. Out of 35 animals, 30 died showing weakness of the hind limbs and collapse. The small intestine was deeply injected and filled with a;flocculent colourless fluid which contained V. cholera; in almost pure culture. Thomas (1893) injected living vibrios intravenously into adult rabbits, and found ecchy-

Mutation of Cholera-Like Vibrios under the Action of Bacteriophage

Introduction.?Koch in 1883 isolated the cholera vibrio from cholera patients in Calcutta. Tinkler and Prior (1884) and Deneke (1885) described vibrios resembling Koch's vibrio that had been isolated from non-choleraic material. In the twelve years following the discovery of the cholera vibrio, Metchnikof, Sanarelli, Gunter, Foker oftid other workers isolated vibrios indistinguishable morphologi...

Mutation of Cholera Vibrios

In a previous communication (1931) we showed that colonies obtained from the direct plating of a cholera stool may be variable in their agglutinability to a cholera standard serum and in their lysability to the cholera bacteriophage. Some colonies escape infection by bacteriophage present in the stool, and are lysable by the filtrate of the stool from which they themselves were isolated. From t...

Cholera, Migration, and Global Health – A Critical Review

The causative agent of this disease was originally described by Filippo Pacini in 1854, and afterwards further analyzed by Robert Koch in 1884. It is estimated that each year there are 1.3 million to 4 million cases of cholera, and 21 000 to 143 000 deaths worldwide ...

Non-agglutinable vibrios causing cholera-like disease in Singapore.

Five strains of non-agglutinable or NAG vibrios have been isolated from stool cultures of patients with cholera -like disease. They resembled the true cholera vibrios culturally, but were inagglutinable by the cholera O -group antisera or the rough anti -cholera serum. The vibrios were sensitive to most of the antibiotics tested. Immunological studies showed that the five strains belonged to th...
